Monterey County residents can put food scraps and yard trimmings in your green organics cart for curbside collection.
These materials are brought to ReGen Monterey, where they’re turned into rich compost — and 100% of it is used by local farms in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. Thank you for helping us combat climate change, reduce food waste, and create a local, circular economy.
These unbagged food scraps can go in your green cart for curbside pickup:
• Fruits and vegetables
• Cooked meats and dairy
• Shells and bones
• Grains
• Coffee grounds
These items are not allowed in your green cart:
• Raw meat
• Plastic, including compostable versions
• Paper
• Metal
• Glass
• Liquids, including oils
• Landscape trimmings
• Brush and tree branches
• Grass clippings
• Sod
• Food scraps
• Clean, unpainted wood (must not be mixed with treated or painted wood)
These organic items are not allowed for organics drop-off:
• Palm trees or fronds
• Cactus, ice plant and other succulents
• Genista (brooms)
• Poison oak
• Paper
• Plastic
• Metal, glass and other mixed waste
