Food recovery is one step toward reaching these goals. The food recovery process involves collecting edible food that might go to waste and distributing it to people in need. Nonprofits and food rescue organizations help make this happen, and ReGen helps support this important work.
California Senate Bill 1383 – Short Lived Climate Pollutants helps fight food insecurity and reduce food waste. The law requires that by 2025, 20% of edible food that would otherwise be sent to landfills must be recovered and redirected to people in need. To make it happen, jurisdictions must establish food recovery programs and strengthen existing food recovery networks. Food donors must recover the maximum amount of their edible food that would otherwise go to landfills. And, nonprofits working in food recovery must keep records of their efforts.
