In 1983, long before many organizations invested in green energy, ReGen Monterey recognized the potential power of its landfill.

As refuse at landfills breaks down, the decomposition process produces a potent greenhouse gas called methane gas. Our organization developed one of the nation’s first landfill gas-to-electric energy plants to capture this byproduct, which can be converted into renewable power. Capturing methane gas actively combats climate change. Today, our expanded system generates approximately five megawatts of clean alternative energy – enough to power ReGen’s entire facility and about 4,000 homes.

By tapping into this alternative energy source, we’re contributing to resource conservation and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. This aligns with our vision for a more sustainable future and showcases our commitment to environmental stewardship.

From an economic perspective, generating electricity from waste not only reduces our operational costs but also creates a potential revenue stream. This innovative approach helps us meet and exceed environmental regulations while demonstrating fiscal responsibility.
