Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year, according to CalRecycle. Some of that food is still fresh and edible. As billions of meals go to waste, millions of Californians don’t have enough to eat. SB 1383 outlines record-keeping mandates and other requirements for food recovery organizations working to address this problem.
A network of local food pantries and food rescue organizations serve the hungry, which includes one in four Monterey County residents. Many of these nonprofits, businesses and public entities rely on volunteers and donations. ReGen Monterey, Salinas Valley Recycles and jurisdictions across the county contribute to grants that support the groups collecting, generating and distributing food to local households in need.
