Community Franchise Collection Facility

In 2016, the District completed construction on a state-of-the-art facility for the franchise waste and recycling collection services provider serving the Monterey Peninsula-area for the next 30 years. The facility is currently leased to GreenWaste Recovery as their base of operations for the collection services they provide locally. Occupying an 11.6 acre site, the project includes an administration building with a customer service call center, vehicle maintenance facility, truck wash, fleet parking, and compressed natural gas (CNG) slow and fast fill fueling stations.

The fueling stations will initially use natural gas from PG&E to produce CNG. CNG is a cleaner fuel source than diesel and produces 22% less greenhouse gas emissions. Later, the station will transition to use biogas produced onsite from the Monterey Peninsula Landfill or an anaerobic digester.

The facility will earn Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Supporting the District’s mission of “Turning Waste into Resources,” 90% of the construction waste was diverted from landfill disposal and building materials incorporated recycled content.

LEED features include:

  • Low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles
  • Low impact stormwater management design
  • Water efficient landscaping
  • Truck wash with closed-loop water reuse
  • Renewable energy supplied by the landfill-gas-to-energy facility
  • FSC certified sustainable wood
  • Recycled and locally sourced construction materials
