Food scraps now go in the Green Cart; an easy way to reduce climate impacts.

It’s a lot easier being green in the new year. Now, Monterey County residents can put food scraps — including cooked meat and bones, among other kinds — in the green curbside cart, to be composted with their yard trimmings. With the greater convenience comes a big reduction in harm to the climate. When food scraps go into the landfill, they break down and produce methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.  But when the scraps go into the green cart, they end up as valuable compost instead. S&P Global Ratings raises long term bond rating from ‘AA-‘ to ‘AA+’, a double-upgrade.

On December 17th, the MRWMD Board of Directors received the good news that S&P Global Ratings raised its long-term rating two notches from ‘AA-‘ to ‘AA+’ on the Monterey Regional Waste Management Authority (MRWMA), California’s Integrated Waste Management System Revenue Refunding Bonds, Series 2021 (Federally Taxable-Green Bonds).

According to the District’s bond underwriter, Loop Capital Markets, the District’s AA+ bond rating is among the highest rating for a pure revenue-backed solid waste agency in the Country and that receiving a double-upgrade is rare and getting a double bump to AA+ is exceptional.

Upon hearing the good news, General Manager, Tim Flanagan shared that “this impressive rating is a testament to the work that the entire MRWMD team accomplishes every day. The District’s rating is reflective of its sound fiscal management, operational excellence, and beneficial strategic planning that has  the District having the second-lowest rate for service in a 100-mile radius.”

Assembly Bill 332 adopts new Treated Wood Waste Alternative Management Standards

On August 31, 2021, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 332 which adopts new Alternative Management Standards (AMS) for treated wood waste, codified in Health and Safety Code section 25230. As a result, all treated wood waste variances issued by DTSC since March 2021 are now inoperative and have no further effect, as they have been replaced by the AMS.
TWW disposal fees will remain the same and the DTSC still requires the District to collect customer information at the time of disposal.
